Analysts of communication systems can learn a lot from studying swarming behaviour in the natural world, and such knowledge can feed back into the production of new and more efficient technologies. This book offers up to date research in this field, including several chapters on swarms: one on optical network optimization based on particle swarm intelligence, one on the use of swarm search algorithms to optimize multiple access networks and, finally, a chapter on ant colony optimization for resource allocation and anomaly detection in communication networks. Two chapters address heuristic searches and optimization-based heuristics. In the biosciences, another chapter presents the results of a study into different strategies of treating muscle contractions on EMG signal processing and analysis during exercise.
