As new advances in biological sciences are continually made, opening up new and previously unimaginable possibilities, important and complex ethical questions are inevitably raised. In the contemporary world, these may address such issues as cloning, life extension, organ donation and abortion, among many others. This book aims to collect high-quality contributions on major subjects in bioethics today, considering social, scientific and philosophical questions. The first part of the book examines stem cell research, an area of much promise but also of controversy, from the perspective of the ethical and religious issues that it raises. The second part discusses the major bioethical area of euthanasia, centring on the "Good Death" controversy for both humans and animals. The section includes an overview of the current debate on voluntary active euthanasia and a critical analysis of the arguments put forward for euthanasia, as well as a discussion of the ethics of euthanasia for control of the dog populations. The final section raises some current medical ethical problems, such as neuroenhancement and pharmaceutical ethics, and provides a critical discussion of the medical ethics curriculum for medical students in Pakistan. The book will interest medical students and researchers and those with interests in applied ethics.
