In the USA, congenital heart disease is estimated to affect eight out of every thousand newborns - in fact, it is the most common congenital defect. Despite a reduction in mortality rates, angina pectoris is still a major public health problem, imposing restrictions on the lifestyle of its many sufferers. There remains a need to improve the treatment and management of both congenital heart disease and angina, in order to reduce mortality rates still further and increase patient quality of life.
This book discusses the range of therapies for angina pectoris, both in terms of ameliorating pain and treating the underlying ischemia to reduce the risk of cardiac damage. The issue of false diagnosis will also be discussed, i.e. the mistaken diagnosis of coronary artery disease as a result of chest pains that are in fact caused by digestive tract diseases such as GERD and esophagitis.
The section on congenital heart disease contains general reviews on diagnosis, management, epidemiology and etiology, along with more detailed treatment of selected topics such as congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.
This book is a useful reference for all clinicians specializing in cardiovascular medicine, as well as providing a source of information for general practitioners.
