The concept of First Aid has been presented as the immediate, temporary treatment given in case of an accident or acute illness before the help of expert medical personnel is sought and secured. The authors have utilised their long experience in the management of accidents and acute illnesses in the emergency services of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in devising the elements of First Aid under the Indian conditions. The book strives to prepare the general public for the following three things to: Educate the public about the social relevance and significance of prevention of accidents; disseminate sufficient information to the reader so as to enable him/her to determine the nature and extent of an injury or acute illness; and prepare the First Aider to perform the proper action at the proper time in a proper manner. People, in general, shy away from helping the victims of accidents. The book attempts to dispel the common apprehensions related to cases of accidents that are often labelled as "medico- legal cases"; which hopefully shall allay the public apprehension and anxiety while performing the humane task of First Aid.
