This book surveys both immunological and microbiological issues relating to the pathogenesis of individual viruses and to the many implications of bacteriophages. Its purpose is firstly to give a thorough understanding of virus replication through detailed studies of individual viruses, and secondly to enhance existing knowledge of bacteriophages, which, in recent years, have attracted interest as a result of their diverse potential.
The first section contains four papers on the subject of virus replication. Together, these papers provide detailed studies of the replication, virulence and immunological effects of common viruses, including the West Nile virus, classical swine fever and the Hepatitis B virus. The second section offers ten perspectives on bacteriophages in medical, pharmaceutical and industrial contexts. These include discussions of numerous current and potential applications, such as in water treatment processes, in drug design and as biocontrol agents in agriculture. Approaches to managing bacteriophage contamination in industrial contexts are also discussed.
The very diverse nature of this survey ensures that this book stands out for its scope and range. It will be of particular relevance to students and investigators in microbiology and biotechnology, as well as to readers interested in viruses and virology more generally.
