For those who are not quite familiar with SI units a chapter on units and conversion factors is included. However as most of the design equations are derived from the basic stress analysis any consistent units can be used for numerical solution. There is a wrong conception that code equations are all empirical. It is shown in this book with reference to the Indian Code how these are developed. This will help the students to understand the applications and limitations of various design equations. As this book is intended mainly for the senior chemical engineering students who would be studying elementary theory of mechanics and strength of materials in their earlier years no separate chapter is included on this. But a chapter defining various terminologies related to stress analysis is given for reference. The sequence of chapters was selected keeping in view of gradual development of design aspects of a piece of chemical equipment. Selective design examples are added in each chapter to illustrate the application of design equations. Material selectien is primary factor in the process of designing chemical equipment. A chapter on this topic gives various aspects of materials of construction. Fabrication techniques and equipment testing are considered to be important to the designer. A chapter is included on these aspects.
