This book which is essentially an abridgement of Microwave Theory and Techniques has been prepared for use as a text in a one-semester course on the senior level for students specializing in the field of Communications. It should also prove suitable for practicing engineers who wish to review the fundamentals of microwave devices. The condensation has in general been accomplished by the elimination of mathematical details that properly belong in a more advanced book. Adequate treatment of fundamental principles has not been sacrificed. For the benefit of those who are not familiar with vector notation and methods the analysis of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in wave guides has been rewritten and presented in scalar form. The problems presented at the ends of chapters and the laboratory experiments outlined in Appendix 2 should be useful adjuncts to the text. Some of the problems outline mathematical details omitted from the text in order to simplify and shorten the presentation.
