This is the first of two volumes on molecular biology and its techniques.
Molecular biology is a huge field and as its name suggests, attempts to describe genetic and cellular processes at protein and nucleic acid level. Key to this attempt is the technique of gel electrophoresis, and a number of chapters within this two-volume book are devoted to the topic, starting with the basics and then focusing on general and specific applications. Specific techniques discussed include agarose gel electrophoresis, pulsed field gel techniques and 2D polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, which has become an important tool in the field of proteomics. The book will also describe recent advances in gel electrophoresis, such as its use for analysing protein-nucleic acid interactions and cancer proteomics.
