Rail travel is a very safe method of transport but when an accident does occur, the potential for large-scale casualties is very real, due to the fact that trains often travel extremely fast and can't move out of the way of an obstruction. Consequently there is an ongoing need to improve train and track design and railway infrastructure, and to increase the level of knowledge we have about the mechanical properties/behavior of tracks and other components of the railway system.
This book presents a selection of papers outlining advances in railway safety and reliability, including train braking systems; analysis, design and monitoring of railway tracks; predicting the reliability of electronic components; and the use of fuzzy controllers to improve the operation of automatic trains. The book will also focus on aspects of railway infrastructure including tunnel blasting and power systems/transmission.
We believe that this book will be of great interest not only to railway engineers and designers, but also to those who are decision-makers in the railway industry or work in governmental transport departments.
